History
Most
historians attribute the invention of batteries to Allesandro
Volta, around 1800. He was doing some experiments which resulted
in him discovering an electrical current from chemical reactions
between dissimilar
metals.
Experiments using different types of metals and electrolytes continued
for the next 60 years. Though the first designs were large and
bulky, they werethe most practical source of electricity during
the 19th century.
In
1802, Johann Ritter introduced the idea of rechargeable batteries,
but they were not actually developed until much later in the century.
